Reddish Knob is located only about an hour away from JMU and is one of the highest points in Virgina. It is one of the highest rated places in VA to go hiking.The view from the top is absolutely breath-taking and a must see for every JMU student.
DIRECTIONS
1. Start on Route 33 to Hinton
2. Make a left turn onto Route 613.
3. Go through the small towms of Cloverhill and Ottibone until you connect with Route 924. Follow Route 924 to the ridge line and the border of Virginia and West Virginia.
4. At the top of the ridge line, you should make your immediate left onto the one lane paved road and follow this to the summit.
HOURS
Reddish Knob is opened year round and all day. You may want to take the trip in the fall to see the leaves changing colors. Avoid hiking in the winter because the conditions of the trails become hazardous the colder and wetter it gets.

The drive to Reddish Knob from James Madison is about an hour so you may want to bring snacks and water with you. Stay for sunset, the view from the top will really make you appreciative of nature. Even if you do make the trip on a warm day still pack a sweatshirt because it does get chilly in the shade of the trees. Level of experience necessary to enjoy your time varies from trail to trail. Map out the trail you want to hike before you go, some trails can take 2 hours while some can take 7 hours.
